Opening a DWG file on your phone

The situation is the same on every site: someone sends a .dwg, the file is on the phone, the computer is at the office. What follows is either an "unsupported file" message or a 300 MB install that wants an account first. Here are the routes that actually work from a phone, and where each of them stops.

1. Store apps

AutoCAD mobile and its relatives open the drawing properly, but they cost three things: install size, a mandatory account, and — in most of them — a paid tier before you can measure anything. Creating an account to look at one file on a scaffold is not what anybody wants to do at that moment. Company phones often block store installs outright.

2. Cloud previews

Google Drive and some mail clients render a preview of a DWG. That preview is an image: zoom in and it blurs, you cannot toggle layers, you cannot measure, and text is not selectable. It is the cover of the file, not the contents.

3. The browser

The only viewer already installed on the phone is the browser. Modern phones support WebGL, so the drawing is rendered by the GPU with no install, no account and no download. Toggling layers, tapping two points to measure a distance and exporting a scaled PDF all work this way.

Where phones get stuck

"Cannot open this file"

Some messaging apps rename files or drop the extension. Save the file into the phone's Files app first, make sure the name still ends in .dwg or .dxf, then upload it.

The picker greys the DWG out

On iOS this usually means the file lives inside another app's storage. In WhatsApp, tap the file and choose Share → Save to Files; the picker will see it afterwards.

The drawing opens but looks empty

Nearly always the geometry is off-screen: one object parked far away in model space drags the view kilometres out. Fit to extents, or switch off the layer holding that stray object.

A big file struggles

A heavy architectural set can push a phone's memory. Open it once, export a PDF, and work from the PDF: if it is vector, the scale and the text survive.

A short checklist for the site

• Save the file to Files first and check the extension.
• Upload over Wi-Fi where you can — DWG files are not small.
• If you are going to measure, confirm the drawing units first (mm or m).
• Export the PDF you need signed: a drawing left open in a tab is gone when the screen locks.
• If it is going to paper, pick the scale up front — 1:50 or 1:100.
