1:50, 1:100 — how to export a PDF at true scale

A scaled export is one you can measure with a ruler. What scale means, which to use when, and why it sometimes comes out wrong.

A scale of 1:50 means one unit on paper stands for fifty in the world: a 1 cm line is 50 cm on site. That simple ratio is what separates a scaled PDF from an ordinary print — on a scaled PDF you can measure with a ruler and trust the answer.

Scale and sheet size are one decision

Choosing a scale is choosing a paper size. A 30 × 20 m floor plan occupies 30 × 20 cm at 1:100 and fits on A4. The same plan at 1:50 becomes 60 × 40 cm and needs A2. At 1:20 it grows to 1.5 × 1 m.

Why the scale sometimes comes out wrong

Unit confusion

This is the most common cause by far. If the drawing was made in millimetres, a grid spacing of 5000 units is 5 metres; if it was made in metres, the same 5000 units are 5 kilometres. Guess the unit wrongly and the scale is out by a factor of a thousand. Confirm the drawing unit before exporting.

The "fit to page" option

Fit to page in a print dialog quietly destroys scale: the drawing is shrunk by whatever arbitrary ratio makes it fit. If you are exporting to scale, that option must be off and the scale stated explicitly.

Paper space against model space

In AutoCAD the model is drawn at full size while a viewport in paper space looks at it through a scale. Mix the two up and the scale printed on the sheet no longer matches the real ratio. When in doubt, trust the measurement rather than the label.

Verifying the export

Open the PDF, measure a distance you know and divide by the scale you chose. At 1:50, a measured 10 cm should correspond to 5 m. That single check prevents the kind of error that is otherwise found after delivery.
